The purpose of the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund (CHASF) is to provide scholarships for college, technical or vocational school to young residents of housing owned or managed by the Charlotte Housing Authority (including Section 8 subsidized residences).
MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY
Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship applicants must meet both of the following criteria:
- Be a resident of public housing owned or managed by the Charlotte Housing Authority (including Section 8 subsidized residences) and be named as an occupant in the current lease for at least one year prior to the scholarship application deadline.
- Applicants attending college, vocational or technical school for the first time must not be over 21 years of age as of September 1 of the school year for which the scholarship award is to be made. Applicants already attending or who have previously attended a college, vocational or technical school must not be over 24 years of age as of September 1 of the school year for which the scholarship award is to be made.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
- Interested students must complete the application and mail it along with official transcript of grades to
CHASF, postmarked no later than March 1, 2011. Applicants will receive acknowledgement of receipt of their application. If an acknowledgement letter is not received within 5 days, call the CHASF Coordinator to verify. - Contact the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund Coordinator at 704-336-5782 to schedule an interview.
- The 2011-2012 CHA Scholarship application cycle ends March 1, 2011. The next application cycle starts January 2012 for August 2012 funding.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The scholarship committee will consider the following when selecting recipients:
- Financial need as determined by the costs of college attendance compared with an applicant’s household income and other financial factors.
- Prior academic performance, personal achievements and school and community involvement.
- Commitment to and demonstrated potential for success in college, technical or vocational school.
Finalists will be asked to attend a personal interview with the CHASF Selection Committee.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Scholarships will range from $500 to $3,400 at the discretion of the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund Selection Committee. Scholarships are paid directly to the recipient’s school and are designated for tuition, required fees, books and supplies. Scholarships are awarded for one year only, but renewal is possible if funds are available and satisfactory academic progress is maintained. Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age or national origin.
